What will I be able to do with this certificate? The holder of this certificate can:
Operate a boat less than 12 metres long with less than 6 people including crew and master and within 1nm of shore or parent vessel.
If the vessel is a tender in radio contact with the parent vessel then the tender may operate within 1nm of the parent vessel and in line of sight of the parent vessel.
For small boats that are not tenders a Coxswain Grade 3 may operate within:
– a marina;
– a mooring area in sight and communication of a marina;

Complete theory training on
- Vessel crew and passenger preparation
- Weather and Tides
- Navigation
- Manoeuvring
- Rope work
- Emergencies
To be eligible for a Coxswain grade 3 near coastal certificate you must:
- Be at least 16 years old on the certificate issue date
- Be able to speak and understand English, including written documents
- Be medically fit for the duties, including eyesight
- hold a first aid certificate. Provide first aid or equivalent course. If this is not included the applicant will be restricted to marina and mooring operations
- Obtain a near coastal medical fitness certificate FORM STANDARDS
- No sea time is required
Complete these subjects over 2 days. Course is thursday and friday 9am to 4pm at 6 Commerce Close Cannonvale. Lunch is 12.30pm to 1.15pm. There is a fridge for bringing your own lunch.

How to apply for a certificate of competency
– Initial issue / renewal
Lodge an application at Australia Post:
- Complete a CoC application form 426 on the computer and print a copy.
- Attach copies of course certificate, first aid certificate and medical.
- Sign the declaration.
- Submit your application and pay a fee at Post Office.
- Provide proof of identity when you lodge your application. Australia Post will take your
photograph for your application.- AMSA may request reasonable evidence to confirm or verify any of the information provided
as part of the application.
